Q&A with Joey O'hare

Joey O'Hare is the founder of veg-centric supper club Hare on the Hill, where menus are inspired by weekly trips to the farmers’ market at Herne Hill. Joey competed on 'MasterChef: The Professionals' - making it to the final twelve! - and has been shortlisted for a Young British Foodie Award for her brilliant work with vegetables.

Best thing on your menu?
Vegetables! Hare on the Hill is veg-centric which means that while great quality meat and fish feature in moderation, seasonal vegetables from my local farmers' market are always the star of the show!

The signature dishes, as it were, of Hare on the Hill are the croquettes which kick off the night, and the raw, vegan cheesecake which serves as a palate cleanser or pre-pud. People are often skeptical but it's small, light and refreshing, and is always a favourite course.

What item of food best describes your personality?
Oh my gosh! I'm using so much beetroot at the moment so I'll say beetroot... sweet and earthy!

Favourite thing to do on your day off (apart from sleep)?
I meet friends at Herne Hill farmers market every Sunday - the fresh seasonal produce is exceptional. We catch up over coffee. It's a beautiful walk across Brockwell Park too. I also love making time for yoga, and trying new restaurants.

Which pair of PolkaPants are your kitchen staple?
Utility Black and Classic Houndstooth
Top recommendation for food in London?
The Dairy is my absolute favourite restaurant - the food is surprising, creative and totally delicious.

Biggest inspiration?
In terms of what influences my food and creativity I would say the seasons - Autumn especially. In terms of a chef, I would say Sally Clarke - the pioneer of a stripped back, hyper-seasonal menu which showcases a lot of vegetables at their best. I love what her food stands for.
